Former Luma AI Head of Dream Lab Verena Puhm Launches AI Native Production Company Matriarch

Verena Puhm, who spent the past year as Head of Dream Lab LA at Luma AI, has launched Matriarch, a production company based in Los Angeles developing AI native and hybrid productions for film and television. The company was announced in Deadline on August 13, 2026.

Puhm ran Luma's Hollywood production arm from its launch in July 2025. Luma AI hired her to build the Dream Lab LA studio after the company announced its push into production with veteran executives and filmmaker partnerships. Matriarch is her next step. She moves from building production infrastructure inside an AI company to running her own production company with AI tools at its center.

Who Puhm Is

Before Luma, Puhm worked as a writer at Leonine Studios' Wiedemann & Berg TV and at Red Bull Media's Terra Mater Studios. Her production background includes lead AI artist on Free Leonard Peltier, a documentary that premiered at Sundance 2025.

Free Leonard Peltier is a significant credit. The documentary uses AI tools in its production, the kind of applied, documented workflow credit that is now becoming a prerequisite for working at the intersection of AI and serious filmmaking. Puhm's background at Luma, combined with this documentary credit, gives Matriarch a founder profile unlike any other production company announced in 2026.

Most AI production companies founded in 2026 have come from three directions. The first is tech entrepreneurs who saw an opportunity in content. The second is YouTube filmmakers with existing audiences. The third is Hollywood writers and directors who adopted AI tools into their existing practice. Promise AI was built by YouTube filmmakers with Hollywood producer credits attached. Darren Aronofsky raised $15 million for Primordial Soup by bringing his established director status to AI production tools.

Puhm is the first founder to cross over from inside an AI tool company's production division. She did not build Matriarch from the outside, watching the tools develop. She ran the unit where those tools were being applied to actual productions. That specific career trajectory, from AI tool executive to independent production company, is new.

The Slate

Matriarch announced four projects:

Colors in the Dark is a hybrid drama series. The project combines conventional and AI production approaches, which positions it for audiences and buyers who want the production quality of traditional television with AI tools in specific departments.

All the Leading Men is an adult animated comedy series. The animated format is well suited to AI production workflows, where generation tools can accelerate the pipeline for character design, scene layout, and environmental art in ways that are harder to achieve in live action.

G-Pigs is a horror feature. The genre positions it for a buyer market that has shown consistent appetite for AI produced content. Several of the AI films that have reached theatrical distribution in 2026 have been horror or genre films, where the visual language of AI generation can enhance rather than distract from the experience.

Chomper Romp is an animated short form series currently in financing discussions. Its short form format and animated style make it the most accessible entry point on the slate for platform buyers evaluating AI production capabilities.

The Team

Two collaborators are announced alongside Puhm:

TEDRA, also known as TT The Artist, is a director and musician who has worked with Netflix and HBO productions including Insecure, P-Valley, and Lena Waithe's Twenties. Her music collaborators include Diplo and Alicia Keys. Her television background gives Matriarch a connection to premium cable and streaming production culture that companies focused entirely on AI often lack.

Morenike Dosu brings visual effects and animation experience from MPC, Framestore, and DreamWorks Animation. Her background at three of the most technically sophisticated production services companies in the business means Matriarch has in house knowledge of how professional productions use AI tools within existing VFX pipelines. That is a different kind of AI expertise than generative model experience alone.

What the Launch Signals

The Luma AI context matters for reading this launch. Luma built Dream Lab LA in July 2025 as its Hollywood production arm. In March 2026, Luma released AI agents. In April 2026, Luma partnered with Wonder Project to launch Innovative Dreams, a hybrid film company. That sequence shows a pattern: Luma was building toward Hollywood production partnerships, not just tool licensing.

Puhm leaving to found Matriarch is the next step in that logic. A company that has built production tools, hired Hollywood executives, and launched a partnership with an established producer has now produced an alumna who is taking those capabilities independently into the market. Matriarch did not get built despite Luma. It got built because of what working inside Luma's production division made possible.

For independent filmmakers and studios tracking where AI production expertise is concentrating, Matriarch is one of the clearest data points available. The person who ran a major AI company's Hollywood production arm decided that running her own company was the right next step. The tools she used at Luma are now available to independent creators at AI FILMS Studio's video workspace and through the Nodes Graph Editor, where the same class of generation models can be combined in custom production workflows.
