Michael Caine's AI Voice Narrates The Odyssey Audiobook Ahead of Nolan's Film
ElevenLabs released a 13 hour cinematic audiobook of Homer's The Odyssey narrated by an AI replica of Sir Michael Caine's voice. The production arrived in June 2026, weeks before Christopher Nolan's theatrical adaptation of the same source material opens in theaters on July 17.
The audiobook is available for free on ElevenReader, the company's dedicated audiobook app. It is the most prominent commercial application to date of the "consent and compensation" model that the AI audio industry is positioning as the responsible path into Hollywood.
Four Producers, Six Weeks, Twenty Voices
The project was produced by a team of four people over six weeks. Beyond Caine's AI narration, the audiobook features a full cast of 20 characters drawn entirely from ElevenLabs' licensed voice library, along with an original AI generated musical score.
No human voice actors or recording sessions were involved in the production. Every audio element, including narration, character voices, sound design, and score, was generated through ElevenLabs' AI audio tools.
The Iconic Marketplace Model
Caine licensed his voice and likeness to ElevenLabs' Iconic Marketplace in 2025. The Iconic Marketplace is a curated collection of celebrity licensed AI voices that companies can pay to use for commercial purposes. ElevenLabs pays creators each time their voice is used in the platform.
For the Odyssey project, Caine was specifically consulted and approved the audiobook's marketing materials. The partnership is described by ElevenLabs as rooted in "consent and compensation". It offers a direct contrast to unconsented AI voice scraping, which has prompted legal challenges across the industry.
A Franchise Test of the Consent Model
Nolan's The Odyssey stars Matt Damon, Robert Pattinson, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, and Zendaya. The film is the most anticipated blockbuster of the summer of 2026, which makes the ElevenLabs audiobook the most commercially visible test of the Iconic Marketplace framework to date.
The timing is deliberate. ElevenLabs positioned the audiobook as a companion to the Nolan film, allowing readers to engage with Homer's epic ahead of the theatrical release. The four person team delivered a full length production with 20 voice characters and an original score in six weeks. By conventional methods, that scale of audiobook would require a significantly larger crew and recording budget.
What the Caine Deal Adds to the Consent Conversation
The audiobook lands at a moment when the entertainment industry is actively debating the terms under which AI voice and likeness technologies should operate. SAG-AFTRA's agreements with major studios include provisions around digital replicas, and California's Digital Replica Protection Act governs what studios can do with AI generated likenesses without consent.
The Caine/ElevenLabs arrangement operates outside those studio frameworks. Caine is a UK based actor and the deal predates the relevant California provisions. The model it describes, a celebrity licensing their own voice directly to a technology platform with per use compensation, offers one answer to the question of how AI voice technology can coexist with talent rights. Matthew McConaughey struck a similar arrangement with ElevenLabs, as explored in the context of celebrity voice AI licensing.
For a deeper look at ElevenLabs' broader Hollywood strategy, including its $11 billion valuation and $330 million in annual recurring revenue, the background context is substantial. The Odyssey audiobook is the clearest example yet of that strategy expressed as a finished product.
The ElevenLabs tools used to produce the audiobook are available in AI FILMS Studio. Eleven v3 generates narration and character voices in the voice workspace. Sound effects generation handles audio design and music composition produces original scores.
